Visualising the Knowledge

Mapping and visualising the rigorous exam taken by London’s taxi drivers

"No mans knowledge can go beyond his experience” John Locke

This work is part of a self-initiated project exploring the Knowledge of London; the rigorous exam taken by London’s black cab drivers. These maps represent some of the different layers of information that must be learned to pass ‘the Knowledge’ – a degree in London that takes an average of four years to complete.

The Knowledge is a fascinating and uniquely London tradition that is now over 100 years old. As we begin to debate the impacts of the sharing economy in London so too we begin to question the value of things like the Knowledge. My attempts to visualise the Knowledge are part of an attempt to understand what constitutes knowledge, but also what value this type of knowledge should hold in our economy.
